Driving through the front gate of St. James Day School's
campus is always a delightful experience. Throughout the extensive growth of
the School and the seemingly endless new building projects, St. James has made
a thoughtful effort to maintain the natural environment in its pastoral nature
setting.
Leaving the gate behind, the road gives an impressionof a drive in the country
as it curves toward the main campus. The Georgian style on the left houses the
K-4 classes
K/4 Preschool
K/4 and 3rd grade playground
On
the right of the road is the Morriss Building, home to
art, music, and kindergarten classes.Parents
drive through the port cochere to drop off their kindergarten
students.

The Morriss Building also houses our new library which
currently contains over 12,000 volumes, and has two Internet-connected computers
for research and automated book checkout.
Kindergarten, Cafeteria, and
Gym
Driving on to the second building on the left, In addition to the two kindergarten
classrooms, this building also contains the cafeteria and full-sized gym.
Located between the cafeteria and K/4 building is the lower school
playground.
Adjoining this building is our Lower School building
which houses grades one through three and Spanish. All classrooms in this building
open into the beautiful Commons where Lower School Chapel and other special
events
take place.
Lower School
Traveling
on toward the Middle School, the Jack B. Kelley Outdoor
Amphitheatre is visible over the grass covered mound. This is the
scene for Kindergarten Graduation and various productions throughout the year.
In addition, numerous classes and presentations take advantage of this beautiful
setting for their activities.
Amphitheater
Middle School students arrive at the amphitheatre by crossing the wooden bridge
spanning the small man-made brook.
Parents of Middle School students drive to the circle at the end of the campus
to deposit their students in the building just this side of the Administration
building. In addition to providing classrooms for grades 4, 5, and 6, as well
as a science lab. The new addition also contains the Middle School multimedia
computer lab, a large commons area, a Parents' Club/Alumni center, and a teachers'
workroom.
Middle School
Middle School Playground and Basketball Court
Behind the Middle School the old Fine Arts building can be seen. This building
was renovated in 1998-99 and
served as the updated and modernized St. James' Library until we got a NEW library
in the Morriss Building!
Finally, the road circles in front of the Administration Building,
originally a family plantation home, and
the focus of our campus.
Care has been taken to maintain this particular building in its original design.
The upstairs family rooms are now offices for the Headmistress,
Business Manager, and Development Coordinator. Formerly used as the library,
downstairs is the St. James reception area where our secretary can provide information
to visitors as well as assisting current students and staff.
Administration Building and K-3 Classrooms
Right and left wings of the Administration building serve as K-3 classrooms.
The St. James Library is now housed in the newly renovated (formerly Fine
Arts) building between the Administration and Middle School buildings. (see
white building behind swings in the photo to the left)
If you park your car to explore the area behind the Administration building,
you will find the K-3 playground as well as the St. James Episcopal Church Recreation
Center, complete with swimming pool and a sand surface volleyball court. St.
James students share these facilities with the church under strict supervision.
